Tips from a Farmer: How to Pick the Perfect Watermelon

I don’t know about you, but one of my favorite parts about the summer is eating watermelon. I don’t know if it is because it is such a delicious and refreshing fruit or if it is because I have such fond childhood memories of running around barefoot, eating watermelon and spitting the seeds.

Like many people, I strive to get the best watermelon that I possibly can and now that I know these secrets, I absolutely nail it, each and every time! If you are looking for the sweetest watermelon this summer and to consistently choose the right ones, these tips will help.

Check for the Field Spot

1

The yellow spot, also known as the field spot, is where the watermelon rested on the ground. A ripe watermelon will always have an orange-yellow or creamy yellow spot. Stay away from the white field spots.

Webbing

2

The weblike brown spots on the watermelon means that bees were touching the flowers many times. If you want a sweet watermelon, look for lots of brown spots.

Boy/Girl Watermelons

3

Did you know you can differentiate a watermelon by gender? Boys are bigger with an elongated shape and are watery. Girls are round and are very sweet.

Size

4

Do not choose either the smallest or the largest watermelon. Look for an average size. Also, make sure the watermelon feels heavy for its size

Tail

5

If the tail is dry, the watermelon is ripe. If it is green, it was picked too soon.
