According to experts, you only have about 1 minute to get out of this situation before your car sinks under water.

First of all, don’t try to open the door, it is just a waste of time. The force of water on the outside of the door will not allow you to do so.

Remember this sequence of steps. First, unbuckle the safety belt. Second, lower the window. Third, climb out of the window.

If you have a manual window, you are at an advantage but not all is lost if you have power windows. Even after a car is submerged, the power is likely to work for at least 10 minutes.

Don’t try to break out the windscreen. It is made of super-strong safety glass.

You can but a specialty tool to break out the side window in case of an emergency. They are relatively cheap and could save your life. If you don’t have one, use what is at your disposal. It could be a wrench, screwdriver or hammer. If they aren’t available. remove the headrest and strike the glass with the metal peg. You can also use a stiletto heel or even your elbow.

Try to strike the corner of the window as the glass is weaker there.

If you have children in the car, unfasten their safety belt once you have broken or lowered the window. If you have multiple children, take care of the older child first and then work your way to the younger child. Push them out of the window and then exit the vehicle last.

If you can’t break or open the window, you can always try the door. This is probably going to be quite frightening, because you will have to let the car fill with water to equalize the pressure before you can open the door. Breathe in as much air as you can, open the door and swim out.

Keep in mind that the door will not open easily. It may be necessary to push with your feet. Keep your hand on the handle as the car fills with water.

You can easily become disoriented in the water so follow the air bubbles to the surface.
