When we were younger, we thought we were invincible and very few of us ever thought about the long-term consequences of what we were doing back then. From time to time, we may have suffered a scrape or bruise or perhaps even a broken bone, but in the long term, there may be some things that are not so easily healed.
The woman in this story, named Judy Cloud, wants to share her story so that other youngsters don’t make the same mistake that she did. Her story is about the effects of tanning beds and exposure to the sun that can cause damage that is not reversible.
You see, when she was younger, she loved going to tanning beds but she didn’t want to wear sunscreen. Now she has turned 49 and has had multiple surgeries to remove cancerous lesions from off of her body.
WARNING: These Images Are Graphic
Judy shared the before-and-after pictures from her surgeries. They can be a little difficult to look at. The surgery not only included her chest and legs, it also included her face. It will take for quite some time to heal and more than likely, she will have additional surgeries in the future.
“I hear too many people say that they feel better about how they look after they go to a tanning bed or after they bake in the sun for hours on end. Look at the pictures. This could be you.”
As teenagers, most of us feel immortal and we may not envision how our actions today will affect us many years from now. We have empathy for Judy, not because of what she did back then but because of what she has to go through as a result of her actions many years ago.
We are thankful that Judy was brave enough to share her story and these pictures. Perhaps it will help at least one person, if not many people, to think about the dangers of sun exposure and tanning beds.
