As part of our daily hygiene routine, many of us reach for a can or stick of deodorant and use it. We don’t really give it much thought, because it is something that helps to keep body odor at bay and may even reduce our problems with sweating. For Rodney Colley, however, reaching for the deodorant left him with quite a problem.
Colley is a 23-year-old college student living in Alexandria, Virginia. He didn’t really give much consideration to any potential problems from using his deodorant, as it was a well-known brand that had been around for many years. After he started using it, however, problems began to occur.
At first, it appeared as a “diaper rash,” that was forming in the region of his underarm area. It continued to get worse and worse as the days passed.
Then this happened:
“I got out of the shower on Monday morning and it felt like my armpit was on fire. So I looked in the mirror and, sure enough, the skin around it started scabbing.”
His underarm problem was traced to his use of Old Spice Pure Sport High Endurance Deodorant. He had used other old spice products in the past and had not had a problem but this particular brand left him with chemical burns. The images below are somewhat graphic, but it can give you an idea of what took place.
Colley is not the only person to experience such a problem. Michael Smith, a YouTube user reported simpler injuries. The picture below is from Smith.
There was also a husband of one of the individuals who commented on Smith’s video who had a similar problem.
Old spice currently has complaints by 155 individuals and 70 out of 75 product ratings give them a one star rating on Consumer Affairs. Most of the complaints are associated with chemical burns and include pictures.
