I don’t look forward to laundry day but it is a chore that must be done regularly because clothing piles up quickly! Washing the clothes is not frustrating but at times, clothing shrinks in the wash and that certainly does get on my nerves!
What many people don’t realize is that there are 3 types of shrinkage. That’s right, not one, but 3 different ways for this type of annoyance to occur. Felting shrinkage is the type that occurs when fabric is exposed to moisture along with excessive heat and the scales compress together.
Relaxation shrinkage is another problem. Don’t let the name fool you, there is nothing relaxing about it! It takes place when fabric is exposed to moisture or liquids and it results in shrinkage. If the fabric is then placed in tepid water, the fibers will relax and swell.
Finally, consolidation shrinkage may take place. This commonly occurs when moisture, heat and mechanical action come together to shrink the clothing. It is common when agitation occurs during the washing and drying process.
If your clothing has shrunk, all is not lost! In fact, you can unshrink your clothing easily with some water and conditioner. The first step is to soak the clothing and water along with 3 tablespoons of conditioner for five minutes.
After removing the article of clothing from the water, lay it out flat on a towel and roll the towel up like a burrito. Doing so will absorb much of the excess moisture from the article of clothing.
Finally, unroll the towel and transfer the article of clothing to another, dry towel. Stretch the clothing out to its original size and allow it to dry in that position.
At this point, your clothing should be back to its normal size and you will not have to deal with tight or short clothing any longer!
