Make Your Own Planter Box with Awesome Cascading Flowers

I’ve seen my fair share of DIY projects but this one is now my personal favorite. It is my favorite, not only because it is easy to do and a great outdoor pastime, it is because the results are so beautiful they are beyond words! It is a cascading flower planter, and when you see the results, you will want to try it for yourself right away.

All of us enjoy having flowers around the home, but I’ve never quite seen them so lovely as this. It takes a little while to build and it does take some time to grow, but even from the moment you plant the first flower, it begins to take on a beautiful shape.

The first step is to build the planter box out of pallets. You can then plant the flowers of your liking, but for this particular project, wave petunias were used.

1

A 2 inch hole saw was used to drill the holes for the petunias. The holes were spaced approximately 6 inches apart.

These flowers are Wave petunias that I got at Costco, you can also rotate the flowers between regular, cascade and wave petunias.

You need good potting mix and you need to add moist soil to help retain water. I put a layer of weed guard down on the bottom, because I had a few holes.

Continue to add flowers until you get to the top

The flowers need to be watered every day because the holes will allow the dirt to dry. Add water until it leaks out of the lower holes. You may also want to fertilize on a regular basis.

A Minor Setback

It was the really hot part of the summer and the foliage was very green and pretty, but no flowers. Realized I needed to spray for bugs and the flowers came back.

Sprayed it for bugs one last time, and one week later it looked amazing! Here is the result of the flower box in late September, gorgeous!
