When most people wake up in the morning, they automatically grab a cup of coffee. Personally, I tend to go more with a cup of English breakfast tea that has lots of sugar and plenty of cream! Of course, I also drink coffee too when I need a caffeine boost but there is nothing like a cup of tea to get me started.
Recently, I realized that there is more to my morning cup of tea that just helping me to wake up. As a matter of fact, tea has been used for thousands of years for all types of afflictions, and it is still beneficial down to this day. Making the right cup of tea can help with everything from headache to a sore throat.
Of course, tea is not a cure-all but it is certainly a good place to start when you are suffering from a minor illness or irritation. It may not keep you from ever getting sick, but you would be surprised with what it is able to do. Here are our favorite tea treatments.
Sniffles and Sore Throat: Lemon
Lemonade is a great drink in the summer but did you realize lemon is also an excellent tea with plenty of health benefits? Lemons are loaded with vitamin C and additional antioxidants and it can certainly help to keep the sniffles away.
In addition, individuals who are suffering from a sore throat will benefit from the powerful acidic properties of lemon tea. It is easy to find or you can make your own from dried lemon rinds.
Headaches or Poor Circulation: Cinnamon
Who doesn’t love the warm, cozy spice known as cinnamon? Many of us enjoy a great cup of cinnamon tea on a cold winter day but it is good for what ails you anytime of the year. You can make your own cinnamon tea by soaking cinnamon sticks and it is great for a headache.
Cinnamon has anti-inflammatory properties so it helps to increase circulation, which reduces headaches as well. It can also help to reduce minor swelling in the sinuses or facial muscles.
Swelling and Menstrual Cramps: Orange Blossom
The light, delicate balance of a cup of orange blossom tea is difficult to resist. It is not only the scent that is attractive, the taste is awesome as well.
Orange blossom tea has sedative properties so it is great for minor swelling or menstrual cramps. Simply steep the dried flowers in hot water and you will be good to go.
Coughing and Scratchy Throat: Thyme
We often use thyme when we cook, but did you realize it can also be made into an herbal tea? You may never have considered it before, but wait to try it. The tea is aromatic and it is perfect for a rough cough.
In addition, anybody who has that slight throat tickle will benefit from a cup of thyme tea as well. It may also benefit various types of respiratory illnesses.
Upset Stomach: Ginger
Ginger has been used for thousands of years for its beneficial healthy properties. If you have an upset stomach, there is nothing like some dried gingerroot steeped in hot water to produce a warming tea that will settle even the worst stomach problems. It is also an excellent choice after a heavy meal.
Stress: Passionflower
When you are feeling stressed out, passionflower has a way of calming you down quickly. In part, it is due to the aromatic burst that you get when you brew a tea from passionflower but the tea itself is awesome for anxiety.
Sleepiness: Peppermint
If you’re feeling a little sleepy and want to wake up, leave the coffee alone and reach for a cup of peppermint tea. The aromatic tea is a natural energy booster. Not only does the tea itself provide some energy, the smell of peppermint also helps to exhilarate the senses.
Restlessness or Anxiety: Chamomile
Chamomile is probably one of the better-known herbal teas and it is an excellent choice before you go to bed at night. The effects of chamomile are not only anti-anxiety, they also help to calm the brain and prepare you for bedtime.
