Mustard Can Be Used In Surprising Ways

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of mustard? More than likely, you think of it as being good on sandwiches, but it seems mustard has many other uses as well. In fact, it has medicinal properties that are quite amazing, and you might be surprised with how many different ways it can be used.

Mustard has been used for thousands of years, has its roots are with the ancient Romans. It was the Egyptians who introduced mustard to the Romans. It was made with unfermented wine that was mixed with mustard seed and at that time, it was known as ‘must’. It even got its name back then!

Here are some alternative uses for mustard that are quite surprising.

Cramps – If you suffer from leg cramps, eat 1 tablespoon of yellow mustard.

Burns – When you burn yourself, first run cool water over it and then cover the area with a layer of mustard. It will help to dull the pain of the burn and prevent blisters from showing up. Mustard contains isothiocyanate, which is a counter irritant that will help to soothe the area.

Sore Throat – When you have a sore throat, mix the juice from one half lemon, 1 tablespoon honey, 1 tablespoon salt and 1 tablespoon of mustard seed. Put it into 1 1/4 cups of boiling water, allow it to cool to a comfortable temprature and then gargle with it.

Cancer – Researchers feel that the allyl isothiocyanate compound in mustard helps to fight cancer. It may help to inhibit cancer growth, particularly when it comes to bladder cancer. There are some researchers who even feel that mustard may be a cure for cancer.

Muscles – When your muscles ache, mustard can help to ease the pain. Mix 2 tablespoons of mustard and 1 tablespoon of Epson salt and infuse it with your bath. It will help to relax the body and soothe the muscles.

If you have specific muscles that are giving you problems, create a paste of one part mustard seed to two parts flour and add water until it becomes a thick paste. Smooth it onto a cheesecloth unfolded inside. Place it on the area and secure with a bandage for 30 minutes.

Hair – Many people don’t realize that mustard oil is a fantastic hair conditioner. After you condition, work a palm-sized amount of the oil through your hair. Leave it on for eight hours or longer if you can. Your hair will be soft and silky in the morning.

Gardening – Do you have a lot of critters in your garden? Put some yellow mustard on a tin plate and hang it in the corner of the garden. The scent will help to keep animals away.

Smells – When you have a lingering scent in a container, put some hot water and mustard and then shake it. The scent should disappear! This will also work with pots and pans.

Skin – You can make a facemask out of mustard as it has anti-inflammatory properties, along with vitamin E and antioxidants. Simply rub a layer of mustard on your skin and leave it for 15 minutes. Be sure to wash it off with clear water.

Decongestant – Mustard may be able to help relieve a cold when you apply it to the skin. If you are congested, rub a layer of mustard on your chest and put a hot, damp cloth on top of it. It will help to make breathing easier.
