It Turns Out That Your Dog Is Sniffing The Ground Before They Poop For A Very Good Reason

When we walk our dog, we often see a type of behavior that may make us wonder exactly what they are doing. They put their nose to the ground and begin sniffing on an invisible line, almost as if they were looking for some type of hidden treasure. Finally, they find the perfect spot and then they stop to do their business.

This type of behavior is somewhat amusing, but you may also be wondering exactly why they are doing it. After all, it is something that all dogs do. It turns out, the answer to why they are doing this is very simple. It is a type of communication that dogs have used for centuries.

Understanding Scent Marking

The instinctual behavior that is displayed by your dog in this regard is known as scent marking. The dog is depositing their own odor, either with urine or feces, into the environment to make a statement or mark their territory.

When other dogs come upon the scent, they can learn a lot about the canine who left it behind. It only takes a little whiff and they know how many dogs have been there, how long ago they were in the area and, most importantly, if there is a female in heat.

Unlocking the Secrets of Anal Gland Aromas

The most common form of scent marking is through urination but feces can also be used to leave a message behind as well. As the dog is defecating, pressure is put on the glands on either side of the anus. It causes the glands to expel a musky scent on the feces.

Dogs may also express their anal glands when they are frightened. The sent may serve to alert other dogs to danger in the area.

At times, the dog may just be sniffing the feces to figure out what the other dogs have eaten recently. In that way, they may know what food is available.

After learning all that they can from the urine or feces, the majority of dogs will return the favour and leave behind some of their own. They are basically the last one to say, “This area is mine, keep away.”
