As a dog owner, you want to make sure that you are giving them the best life possible. You take care of their health needs, ensure that they get plenty of good food to eat and enough exercise on a daily basis. There is also something else that you should know, it’s the fact that your dog is trying to speak to you in rather unusual ways!
Many of us try to look at our pets from a human standpoint to determine why they are doing what they do. In reality, there may be very specific reasons why they are doing it and understanding those reasons can help you to be a better pet owner and to show your dog that you truly care. In addition, it can help to make your dog a happier and healthier animal.
1. Staring directly in your eyes
This type of behavior is sometimes known as hugging you with their
eyes. It doesn’t matter if you are cuddling with the animal,
playing with them or just looking at them, oxytocin is released
during that time. That is the same hormone that mothers release
when they are with their new babies. Maintain eye contact with your
dog without being awkward and they will respond in an amazing
way.
2. Yawning if you yawn
There is no doubt that yawning is contagious but did you know that
dogs will also yawn when you yawn? According to research, yawning
is contagious because it’s an empathetic reaction. If your dog
yawns when you yawn, it may just show that they have bonded with
you.
3. Leaning on you
When a dog leans on you it means that they are craving support. It
may also mean that they are comfortable with you and trying to
display affection.
In some cases, leaning may be a sign of anxiety or nervousness. They may lean on your leg because they want you to protect them from what is making them nervous.
4. Cuddling after they eat
This type of behavior shows that the dog loves you from the heart.
As any dog owner knows, a dog loves his food but when he is
finished eating, and he cuddles with you, it means that he loves
you as well.
5. Wiggling or lifting eyebrows
The way the dog moves his face is a strong indication of what is
going on inside of his mind. According to recent studies, when a
dog sees something that is familiar to him, he will respond by
lifting his eyebrows, especially the left eyebrow. If he is
introduced to a stranger, on the other hand, there is less
expression on his face but he will tend to lift his right
eyebrow.
The same may also be true with the ears. When a dog sees someone that he knows, his left ear will shift backward. When he sees someone he doesn’t know, it is the right ear that responds.
6. Watching calmly as you leave
Some people feel that a dog must go absolutely insane when they
leave the house, because it means that they love them and don’t
want them to go. The opposite may actually be true. Studies have
shown that a dog acting calmly when you leave the home shows a
higher level of trust. When they act up as you leave, it is a sign
of separation anxiety.
7. Going crazy when you return
There isn’t a need to go into this type of behavior to a large
extent. Quite simply, when your dog acts this way, it means that
they are happy to see you!
8. Sleeping in your room
This all boils down to the pack mentality. If your dog wants to
sleep on your bed while you are sleeping, it means that they trust
you and are a welcome part of your “pack.”
9. Bringing you a favorite toy
At times, this type of behavior may mean that your dog wants to
play but it may also mean that they are showing you to be the
dominant animal in the pack. They are bringing you their favorite
toy because they are offering something to you that is of worth to
them.
10. Enjoying being loved
If you love your dog, they will be able to sense it and will show
love in return. It truly is that simple!
