Redo Your Ugly Bathroom Counters for $10

There are times when it may seem as if a DIY project is never going to turn out properly but once you are done, it turns out to be the best thing you ever did! That may be the case when you’re trying to remodel the bathroom, and doing it yourself is certainly preferable because of the savings. There are some ways to cut corners and if you do it properly, the results can be amazing!

The bathroom project shown in this post can be used by anyone who wants to turn laminate countertops into an awesome centerpiece for the remodeled bathroom. The best part about it is that you can do everything for under $10.

This is what the bathroom looked like when the project started.

1

The first step in the bathroom remodel was to paint the bathroom cabinets white and it turned out amazing! When they were finished, however, it really made the laminate countertop stand out like a sore thumb.

That is when it was decided that the countertop would be spray-painted. I know it sounds odd, but using an aerosol can of spray paint can truly leave you with an amazing finished product.

Of course, before any spraying was done, absolutely everything in the bathroom was covered with plastic and the edges were taped off with painters tape. That would ensure that the paint would not drift and get anywhere it wasn’t intended to go.

2

There are a wide variety of spray paint choices available, so make sure you take your time and visit your local hardware store to choose one that is right for you. For this project, the Rustoleum brand “American Accents” in a stone finish was used. Depending upon the size of your countertop, you may be able to get away with a single can of paint. For the countertop shown in this project, 1 can was used but there were 4 light coats of paint applied.

3

When using any type of spray paint, it is important to shake the can on a regular basis so that the heavier particles within the paint don’t settle. That is especially true of specialty paint, because the particles that give it a stone finish look would easily go to the bottom of the can.

It is also important to be cautious about the fumes that are produced when you paint. Ventilation is always important but make sure you don’t get a cross breeze, as it could push the paint out of the area and into other parts of the home. A window that is partially open and the vent fan in the bathroom should suffice.

Apply thin coats, making sure to get the paint into every corner or odd angle on the countertop. Allow the paint to dry between each coat.

After it dries completely, remove the plastic and tape and pat yourself on the back for a job well done!

Anyone who is familiar with your old bathroom is certainly going to be impressed by your new remodeling job. When they ask about your new counter, let them know you did it yourself.
