Laundry is one of those chores that just keeps coming up one week after another. Most of us feel as if we have a handle on the situation but you would be surprised with how many mistakes are made.
Making mistakes when doing laundry can be bad on a number of levels. Not only can it damage what is being washed, it can damage the washer as well. Pay close attention to the following 15 common mistakes made while doing laundry. Avoid them to make your laundry day work for you.
1. Sorting – Don’t just sort by colour, consider the fabric type as well. Try not to mix extremes and don’t include fabric with synthetic fibers with other laundry.
2. Lifting Stains – Scrub those stains too vigorously and you may end up putting a hole in the fabric. Wash the stain off gently.
3. Too much powder – When you use too much powder, it may end up collecting dirt in the collar of shirts because of too much foam.
4. Zippers – Make sure that you zip the zipper before doing laundry or the zipper could damage other clothes.
5. Buttons – Before doing the laundry, make sure that you unbutton the buttons or it could look sloppy.
6. Bleach – When you add bleach, be sure not to add too much or you could make the fabric tear more easily. Try boiling the laundry instead.
7. Swimming Suits – Any clothes made from spandex should not be washed in a washing machine. Wash them by hand in cool water.
8. Resting – Don’t bother resting the machine between loads. Running it continuously reduces electricity usage.
9. Pillows and Blankets – When you wash pillows or blankets be sure to run two cycles. The feathers can retain foam and the soap can stay inside of the pillows.
10. Socks – Rather than looking for socks after you’re done, do a load of socks first.
11. Towels -Do not use fabric softeners when doing a load of towels. It can reduce absorption
12. Too Many Clothes – Overloading your machine can cause it to break down.
13. Windbreakers – Add 3 tennis balls to the washer to prevent the down from losing its structure.
14. Spending Too Much – Don’t spend too much on powders and liquids. The less expensive ones work just fine.
15. Pay Attention – Be sure to look after the washing machine carefully, clean it and do any necessary maintenance. Run a cycle every year of hot water and vinegar.
