I remember not all that long ago I bought a brand-new shirt and wore it for the first time. I was going out to have some dinner with friends and everything was going fine, until I looked down and saw a big, ugly grease stain on my shirt!
I had been very careful about not dropping food but it still happened. This type of issue has happened to me many times in the past and it may have happened to you in the past as well. Once this type of the stain occurs, I used to simply throw the shirt away, as I felt there was no way to ever get it clean again.
After learning this simple technique, however, I recognize that it was possible to remove those types of oil stains. It is nothing new, but if you are considering your oil stained shirts ruined, you will love knowing it.
1. Gather your supplies: liquid dish soap, WD-40, baking soda, an old toothbrush, Q-tips and a piece of cardboard.
Put the piece of cardboard behind the stain and then spray the area with WD-40. The cardboard will keep the WD-40 from spreading to the other parts of your shirt. Q-tips can be used to spread the WD-40 into the shirt. This step reactivates the oil.
Dump baking soda all over the oil stain. It will absorb the oil.
Scrub the baking soda with the old toothbrush. The baking soda will begin to form clumps.
Pour dish detergent over the baking soda. Use the toothbrush to work the detergent into the area. If any clumps stick to the toothbrush, wipe them off with a rag.
Remove the cardboard and run the shirt through the laundry machine like you normally would. Don’t put it in the dryer after it runs through the washer. If any stain remains, repeat the process. Drying it would bake it into the clothing.
The stain is gone!
