Make Your Own Giant Area Rug

Although we may not give the floors in our home the attention they truly deserve, there is one thing that many of us could never do without. It is an area rug, as it helps to warm the room and make it much more comfortable. Unfortunately, large area rugs can also be quite expensive.

Along with being expensive, large area rugs are difficult to come by when it comes to exactly what you need. You might find the size that you want but the colors are off.

After you learn this simple technique, you will never go back to buying expensive area rugs again. It is quite simple to do and when you put a rug together for yourself, you will be amazed with how well it matches your room.

The first step in the process is to collect as many carpet squares as you need to complete a rug for the size you want. You can often find these carpet squares on Craigslist or through other online services. Carpet stores will also have a small carpet squares for sale as well.

Typically, a carpet square will only cost you $1 or $2, although the price may vary slightly. When choosing carpet squares, try to stick to the same type of material and carpet length. You may also want to stick to the same style, Berber with Berber or shag with shag. It is also possible to mix-and-match, but you will be happier with the result if the length of the carpet material is the same.

Try not to cut yourself short as well. It is better to purchase a few extra squares rather than running out at the end.

All in all, you will likely spend less than $30 for a large area rug!

Lay out the carpet squares in a pattern on the floor of the room. This will give you a general idea of how the finished product will look.

1

More than likely, it will take less than an hour to get the exact look you want.

Now it is time to begin putting the carpet squares together. You can use duct tape but for a higher quality option, purchase carpet adhesive tape. You can purchase it at a hardware store for just a few dollars.

2

Cut strips of carpet adhesive (or duct tape) to length.

3

Follow the instructions for peeling the carpet strips and placing it underneath the edge of the carpet squares to attach them together.

4

The gap should disappear between the squares when it is properly connected.

5

Since you will be using odd sized squares, you may end up with some small holes. Why not get creative and add some accent colors to fill in the holes?

After you have attached the carpet squares together, use some shelf liner and attach it under the carpet to keep it from sliding. The shelf liner will also act as a protective layer for the floor.
