One of the most frustrating things that many of us deal with on almost a daily basis is the fact that we wake up tired, and we stay tired for the rest of the day.
It doesn’t seem to matter what we try, we tend to sleep poorly and it can really have an effect on our health, both physically and mentally.
If you have ever had this type of problem or if you have it on an ongoing basis, there are things you can do to hack your sleep and wake up rested.
Simply follow these 11 rules for getting a good night sleep and they could change your life.
1. Magnesium – There may be some benefits to eating foods with magnesium, as they could help you to sleep through the night. Foods such as spinach, Swiss chard or pumpkinseed contain a lot of magnesium. You can also try a supplement.
2. Power nap – Research has shown that taking a power nap of anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes in the middle of the afternoon can help you sleep better at night.
3. Keep the Bedroom Off-Limits – The only reasons why you should use the bedroom are for bedtime activities.
4. Temperature – A bedroom that is kept slightly cool will help you to get a better nights sleep.
5. Wake up Every Day – Keeping your wake-up time consistent will help you sleep better at night. Make sure you get up at the same time on the weekends as well.
6. Sleep Debt – We tend to keep track of how much sleep we are missing, so if you are lacking in sleep, get caught up.
7. Get up – If you are in bed for more than 20 minutes tossing and turning, get up and do a relaxing activity, such as listening to soft music or reading.
8. Turn the Alarm Clock – Watching the minutes tick by can cause anxiety and keep you from getting a good night sleep. Face the alarm clock the other direction.
9. Lavender – Individuals with insomnia could try some lavender scented candles or essential oils. It has helped many people to get the sleep they need.
10. No Lights – Keep the lights dim or off when you are trying to fall asleep. You should also avoid any lights from electronics, including the TV, for up to an hour before bedtime.
11. Fresh Air – Getting some fresh air before you go to bed can help to reset your internal clock and make it easier for you to sleep.
