When most of us feel sick or have a health problem, we are quick to run to the doctor. They tend to give us a checkup, prescribe a dose of medication and send us on our way. It wasn’t all that long ago, however, that people used natural remedies to heal things at home. If you understand what they used to do, you can still use them today.
Perhaps you can remember your grandparents using some of these remedies to heal everything from a Planters wart to the common cold. If you would like to try some of them for yourself, the following remedies are some of the most popular that they used. You might be surprised with how well these work if you use them properly.
1. Raisins for Arthritis
Raisins are actually a very common treatment for arthritis. Soak some golden raisins overnight in gin. The anti-inflammatory effects of the chemicals in the gin can help to reduce swelling and ease the pain.
2. Celery for Bad Breath
Many people have used celery to tone down bad breath. Rather than chewing gum or using mints, just put some celery in your mouth and start chewing.
3. Lemon for Earaches
Apparently, squeezing some lemon juice onto and earbud and putting it in your ear for a minute or two can help to alleviate an earache. The lemon juice stabilizes the pH levels and keeps the bacteria from growing.
4. Nettles for Hair Loss
This one may be a bit bizarre, but many people claim that it works quite well. Inside of nettles, you will find high levels of calcium, protein, phosphorus, iron, magnesium and beta-carotene. There are also many vitamins in nettles as well. They can help to stimulate hair growth and hair maintenance.
Brew a kettle of boiling water and put 4-6 nettle leaves in the mug. Pour the hot water over the nettles and enjoy. Be sure you don’t use too many because they are high in silica and could be harmful.
5. Yams for menopause
Be sure that you are eating yams and not sweet potatoes. Yams have a rougher, thicker skin and are darker in colour. They contain vitamin A and high levels of vitamin C that help to balance hormones. They can also lower your cholesterol.
6. Olives for motion sickness
This one may sound like an old wives’ tale, but many people feel that it works. Olives are high in tannins, helping to reduce the production of saliva. In doing so, it can help to reduce the sickness that you may feel if you have motion sickness.
7. Baking soda for a UTI
Sprinkle some baking soda in a glass of water and watch your UTI symptoms disappear over time. The baking soda annoys the infection and keeps your bladder at a more alkaline level, stopping bacteria from multiplying.
8. Dried apricots for indigestion
Dried apricots have a lot of dietary fiber, and they help your stomach to digest food and prevent bloating. Eat them after a meal and you may never have indigestion again.
9. Potatoes for spider bites
Raw potatoes have anti-inflammatory and anti-itch properties. Wrap a raw, sliced potato in a bandage and put it on the skin where you were bitten.
