7 Sleeping Positions and What They Are Telling You

Every night when we go to bed, our body is telling us something about ourselves and very few of us are listening. It doesn’t matter if you are a good sleeper, a poor sleeper or if you fall somewhere in the middle, if you pay attention to what your body is telling you it is speaking volumes!

One of the ways that our body talks to us is associated with our sleep position. You might be surprised to learn that there are actually 7 different sleep positions, each of which means something specific. Experts have quite a lot to say about those different sleep positions, so it may be a good idea for you to listen carefully.

1. Fetal Position

1

This is the most common sleeping position, as over 40% of all people sleep in it regularly. It is known as the fetal position because we are in the same curled up position as a fetus is inside of the womb. Those who sleep in this position are said to be in need of a little refining but you may have a sensitive side as well and feel that you need protection.

2. Log Position

2

This sleeping position also ranks fairly highly, although it is not as common as the fetal position. Individuals who sleep in this position do so on their side with their legs and arms straight down. One arm may be put under the pillow to add comfort. Individuals who sleep in the log position may be more social, easy-going and trusting than others.

3. Yearner Position

3

Although this may look like a comfortable position to sleep, those who find themselves in this position regularly may have a cynical and suspicious side. On the other hand, you may stick to your word more readily if you sleep in this position and you may be willing to explore something new.

4. Soldier Position

4

If you tend to sleep on your back with your arms and your legs extended straight down, similar to the way a soldier stands at attention, you may be lacking a good nights sleep. Most people who sleep in this position tend to snore and although you may be quiet and reserved, you may also have high standards, both for yourself and for others.

5. Starfish Position

5

You are more likely to see this sleeping position in the movies than in real life, as only a small percentage of the population sleep this way. Individuals who sleep in this position may have a difficulty getting a good night sleep and snoring may be a problem as well. On the other hand, those who sleep in the starfish position tend to be friendly, compassionate and good listeners but do not like being the center of attention.

6. Freefall Position

6

There is not necessarily any specific way that this position lands, it is just doing whatever it takes to be comfortable. More than likely, an individual who sleeps in a freefall position has their head tilted to one side and sleeps on their stomach, perhaps with their arms wrapped around the pillow. Most individuals who sleep in the freefall position make quick decisions and can be outgoing. They also may be somewhat nervous, harsh and critical of criticism.

7. No Specific Position

7

Although we have already discussed 6 different ways that people can sleep, there are some who just don’t like to fit into any mold. These individuals may sleep on their backs one night, or their stomachs another and on their sides the next. More than likely, an individual who does not have a specific sleep position may be unsettled, confused and even stressed out in their life. The fact that they can’t commit to a sleeping position may mean they have a fear of commitment as well.
