8 Signs You Have a Gluten Intolerance

It seems as if more and more people are having a problem with gluten, and it may cause a reaction, anytime a food containing gluten is ingested. Gluten itself is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. The most common symptoms of an intolerance to gluten include fatigue, depression and pain.

Wheat is a grain that can be found in many items, including cereals, breads and pastas. It may also be found in soups, salad dressings and in trace amounts in many other types of foods. Rye is found in bread, beer and cereal and barley is typically used for feeding livestock. All of them include gluten, so eating those foods could lead to insensitivity.

An intolerance to gluten can also lead to a larger issue known as celiac disease. It is an autoimmune disorder that can have damaging effects on the small intestines.

As gluten is ingested, the body reacts with a strong immune response, attacking the intestines directly. It can also cause damage that leads to low absorption of nutrients from the food that you eat. Approximately 1% of the population is gluten intolerant.

If you do eat gluten and you have gluten intolerance, the most common signs you will experience include the following:

1. Abnormal immune function

The lgA antibodies, found in the gastrointestinal track in the saliva, have a counter effect on the immune system. They are the first line of defense to diseases, including the common cold and flu. When you experience such a counter effect, the body cannot fight off a cold and flu completely.

2. Fatigue

Medical experts agree that gluten intolerance can lead to fatigue and exhaustion. This results from inflammation and a misallocation of energy reserves in the body.

3. Headaches, including migraines

Gluten sensitivity can also cause problems with headaches, including migraine headaches. Up to 56% of gluten intolerant individuals have a problem with migraines. 14% in the control group suffered from the same issue.

4. Joint and Muscle Aches

The inflammation caused by gluten intolerance can lead to joint pain and muscle aches.

5. Brain Fog

A problem with brain fog is often linked to celiac disease. It is one of the more common symptoms of an intolerance. According to an article published in the Journal of Neurology Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, a type of antibody, known as immunoglobulins, reacted abnormally to gluten, leading to impaired cognitive function.

6. Weight gain

Individuals who suffer from gluten sensitivity may gain weight quickly and suddenly. This is also associated with inflammation that may be stimulated by gluten as well as malabsorption. By avoiding gluten, the weight should stabilize soon.

7. Dental health

A study published in the BMS Gastroenterology showed there was a direct link between gluten intolerance and a condition that caused mouth ulcers and canker sores. They malabsorption associated with gluten intolerant people can also reduce their calcium levels. Calcium is important for healthy teeth and bones.

8. Skin Problems

Some of the skin issues associated with gluten intolerance can include dermatitis, acne and eczema. It is the malabsorption associated with gluten intolerance that can affect the skin, leading to rashes, itching, redness, burning and blisters.
