When a recipe calls for eggs and you add one to it, what do you do with the eggshell when you are finished? If you have been putting eggshells in the trashcan or down the garbage disposal, you are wasting an awesome health opportunity.
Did you know that eggshells were made up of 90% pure calcium? Calcium is the most abundant mineral found in the human body. It is important for many functions in the body, including for building healthy bones and teeth. It also has a positive effect on our muscle, nerve and enzyme health. Chemically speaking, the calcium found in eggshells is the same as what makes up our teeth and bones.
According to the National Institute of Health, ground-up eggshell powder is easily absorbed by the human body. It could have a number of positive health effects, including producing healthier blood cells, strengthening your bones, lowering your blood pressure and lowering your cholesterol levels. There are roughly 1000-1500 mg of calcium in a teaspoon of eggshell. That is 90% of the daily recommended amount!
How do you get the calcium into your body without crunching away on an eggshell? It is easy to do. The first step is to save the eggshells and then you do this:
1. If eggshells haven’t been already boiled, boil for 10 minutes to kill any harmful bacteria.
2. Let your eggshells cool and then grind up in a coffee/spice grinder until it’s in a fine powder.
3. Keep your calcium powder in an airtight jar.
The most common way to take eggshell powder is to add a half teaspoon to a glass of water and gulp it down. You can also experiment by adding it into other foods such as oatmeal or smoothies.
