One of the difficulties we may experience in life is an ingrown toenail. If you have ever had such an issue, you realize that it can be quite uncomfortable! Although the injury itself is rather small, the pain that it causes is sometimes severe and they can be annoying when you try to walk.
An ingrown toenail takes place when the nail begins to grow in a curved pattern. As a result, it grows into the skin on the edge of the toenail, leading to tenderness, redness and swelling. It is not out of the ordinary for an infection to be associated with an ingrown was well.
There are a number of issues that can lead to an ingrown toenail, including a foot injury or poorly fitted shoes. There is even some evidence that having a family history of ingrown toenails makes it more likely for you to have the problem! They can be difficult to prevent and are fairly common but that doesn’t mean you need to take them lying down.
If you are having a problem with an ingrown toenail, the following methods can help to ease your pain and, at times, may even correct the issue.
1. Soak the Foot – The first step in treating your ingrown toenail at home is to soak your foot in water containing Epsom salts. Epsom salts can help to disinfect the foot and will help to sooth the area. Use lukewarm water for this purpose and soak your feet for up to 20 minutes. Soaking your feet in water will also help to soften the nail.
2. Relieve the Pressure – Much of the pain that you experience is due to the nail applying pressure to the skin. You can relieve some pressure by carefully lifting the nail using tweezers and inserting a small piece of cotton under it. Only push the cotton in far enough so that the nail rests on it, do not force it under the nail. Bacteria may accumulate on the cotton so change it regularly. This is only a temporary solution but it can help.
3. Use an Antibiotic – Apply an antibiotic ointment to the area of the ingrown toenail. This will help to reduce the possibility of infection. It is also important to keep the area clean to avoid the accumulation of bacteria as well. Keep the toe sterile by applying a bandage.
4. Apply Tea Tree Oil – This natural treatment is often used as a disinfectant. A few drops on the toenail is all that should be necessary to remove bacteria that can lead to infection.
Using these home remedies can help to relieve some of the discomfort of an ingrown toenail. Avoid the temptation to trim or cut the toenail, as it could lead to damage to the toe. If necessary, your doctor will provide the best method for toenail removal.
