We all know how important it is to eat plenty of vegetables. Unfortunately, many of us fall short in this regard and even if we buy vegetables, they don’t tend to last long enough so that we can eat all of them. Once you know this little trick, however, your vegetables will last longer and you will not only save money, you will be healthier.
This trick can work on any type of vegetable but it is especially effective on leafy green vegetables. When you pull greens out of the refrigerator, you want them to be crisp. After all, limp vegetables are not as appetizing. Use this trick and your vegetables will stay crisp and fresh longer.
Use These Three Easy Steps:
1. Wash your vegetables thoroughly after bringing them home. Shake off the excess water as much as possible without damaging the veggies.
2. Place the vegetables in a large Ziploc or other closable bag.
3. Put a few clean, dry paper towels in the bag with the vegetables and close the bag before storing it. Check the vegetables every few days to see if you need to replace the paper towels with dry ones.
The Science behind It:
Moisture is the enemy of crisp vegetables. When too much moisture exists inside of the bag with the veggies, they will go limp and be less appetizing. Putting the paper towels in the bags helps to soak up the moisture and keeps the veggies fresh.
It is also possible to skip the washing process, and that will help your vegetables to stay fresh longer as well. When you don’t wash them right away, however, it becomes more of a chore to grab them from the refrigerator and eat them.
This simple trick will not only make your life easier, it has the potential to make you healthier as well. Make sure that you share this trick with friends and family, they will thank you for it.
