When most of us think about doing craft projects with the children, sandpaper never really enters into the picture. The fact of the matter is, however, using sandpaper properly can make the best craft project of all time.
It is relatively simple and the finished result will produce something that is quite amazing.
This crafting idea is a DIY T-shirt screen printing project. Not only are you going to be surprised with how well it works, you will be impressed with your ability to create something so fantastic with only a few minimal supplies.
The first thing you need to do is to grab some sandpaper, T-shirts, crayons and an iron. If you don’t have any sandpaper on hand, you can buy some at your local hardware store. Use fine sandpaper rather than course.
You should color on the rough side of the fine sandpaper, using what ever colors you like. Crayons color rather nicely on sandpaper, and is not difficult to get a thick layer of crayon wax very quickly.
Keep in mind that anything you draw on the sandpaper is going to be reversed once it is imprinted on the T-shirt. That is especially important to consider if you are writing any letters or numbers.
The next step is to place the cardboard inside of the t-shirt in the area where you want the design. The cardboard keeps the colors from bleeding through. The sandpaper should then be placed on the t-shirt with the drawing down and it should be on the T-shirt in the area where you want the image imprinted.
Put a paper towel over the sandpaper and press everything down with a hot iron. Hold the iron in place for 30 seconds.
Don’t remove the sandpaper all at once. Lift an edge carefully to make sure that it has imprinted properly. If it did not imprint as nicely as you would like, repeat the ironing process for an additional 30 seconds.
Look at the results!
Make sure to remove any excess wax by placing a few paper towels over the design and ironing it again. It might also benefit to throw the T-shirt in the dryer for 20 minutes to set the bright colors.
Be sure to wash this shirt by itself the first time it goes into the laundry.
