Many of us consider ourselves to be rather crafty, and we do what we can around the home to ensure that it is beautiful, as well as unique. To be certain, there are many different DIY projects that can be done, but we think this one is over the top on the creativity scale.
What parts of the home do you consider when you think of a DIY project? If you’re like most people, you think about painting the walls or perhaps doing something with the draperies, but what could you do with the staircase? It seems as if it is possible to do something quite awesome, as you are about to see.
Pippa Branham is also somebody that considers herself both handy and crafty but she recently took her DIY skills to the next level. She turned an old staircase into something marvelous.
Their family moved into a permanent home in the UK last year. He gave her the opportunity to leave her mark in a very creative way.
“For the first time ever, I was allowed to really personalize my so I wanted to do something different. It was just an image I saw. There were no tutorials or instructions.”
As it turns out, her imagination was more than what any of us could expect. She took the 13 stairs of their home and painted them to look like books. As you can see, the end result is incredible.
Some research was done to ensure that it was not only beautiful, it was also safe. After all, people would be using the stairs regularly.
She decided to mix in some children’s play sand to keep the stairs from being too slippery.
She bought some emulsion paint tubs and tubes of silk and matte paints. She even found them all on sale!
Safety is always a concern when dealing with a DIY project such as this, but you don’t want to blow the budget either. They were first going to hide the stairs, which would’ve cost £200 but this project ended up saving them £180!
It took a few trips to bargain stores to get the supplies at a good price. It also took a lot of masking tape. She received the clear varnish spray as a gift, so she saved additional money in that way.
She chose a lot of her favorite books because she was putting in the hard work.
“The particular spines were chosen based on the spines which matched the book I had read at the time I read them, rather than just the book covers which are available now,” she explained. “I had read some of them through library services or borrowing from family and friends so I had to track them down to get images of the spines sent to me.”
“The hardest part was without a doubt the sideways lettering,” she said. She also said it was her favorite part because it was satisfying to finish.
The project took over 35 hours, which was spread over six weeks.
She did everything on her own but she was kept company by her daughter.
I don’t know anyone who would want to live under these stairs!
