Back in high school, there were a few kids in my class who had dyslexia. Although they were in with all of the other students, they were given some freedoms, such as additional time to take tests.
It seems as if I had quite a distorted view of what it meant to be dyslexic, as I thought it just took a little longer for them to read and comprehend. It wasn’t until I saw this dyslexia simulator that I actually understood what they were going through. The reading disorder known as dyslexia inhibits one abilities to read, write and spell quickly. They may also have a problem sounding out certain words in their head.
I always thought that it was a burden for the individuals who suffered from it but many people with dyslexia view it as a gift. It doesn’t have anything to do with their level of intelligence and many people who were highly intelligent have had the disorder, including Thomas Edison and Albert Einstein. Although we may hear from many people what it feels like to have dyslexia, we will never truly experience it until we see it visually.
A programmer by the name of Victor Windell came up with the page that gives a fair simulation of what it may feel like to be dyslexic. A friend of his who was dyslexic described what she experienced when she read.
Although not every person may have this exact sensation, taking a look at this text can help you to see what it is they are seeing.
