There are many times when your dog may be speaking to you but, unless you know how to listen, you may miss what they are saying. The way they often talk is through body language and it can show everything from trust to illness.
The following 16 different tips can help any dog owner. Make sure that you read through them and keep them in mind and you will always know what your dog is trying to say.
Wagging a lowered tail
This means that your dog doesn’t understand what is taking place and want you to tell him what to do. If it wags rapidly, you are in charge.
Tail raised and tremoring slightly
The dog is challenging your authority because he considers himself to be in charge.
Tail tucked between the legs
This is a sign of fear, pain or discomfort. If you can’t tell why your dog is doing it and he does it often, you should go to the vet.
Eyes wide open and alert
Your dog wants your attention. He is challenging you and expects you to respond
Dog squinting and blinking
Your dog will do this when he is ready to play. If he is squinting frequently, he may be experiencing a painful condition.
Ears straight up or slightly forward
Your dog is curious and reacting to a new event
Ears flattened against the head
This is a sign that your dog is frightened. It may only be one ear, typically the left one. They will often react this way to people they are unfamiliar with or afraid of.
Yawning
When your dog yawns, they are likely grumpy and nervous. They often do it when they are surrounded by larger, unfamiliar dogs.
Licking his own face
This is a sign of stress or pressure
Exposing teeth but no snarling
Your dog is protecting his territory. This is common while eating
Rolling over and exposing his belly
This is a sign of trust. When you rub their belly after they roll over, it shows them you are pleased with them.
Head on your knee
Your dog will do this when they want attention.
Putting his paw on your knee
If your dog gives you a smug look while doing so, they are trying to dominate you. Look your dog in the eye and remove the paw
One front paw raised
This means your dog wants to ask you something. He may be hungry or want to play.
Turning his back
This is a sign of trust

Dogs may do this to relieve tension
