As the world gets older coming up with something original becomes more and more difficult. People become jaded and bored and in the world of crafting and interior design, originality is much sought after. These lovely crocheted led lights create a stunning visual masterpiece and are very easy to make. Originally designed by Johanna Hyrkäs for IMU Design the illuminated rug is sweeping the internet like crazy, with new designs appearing on an almost daily basis.
The lighting in any room is critical when it comes to setting the correct ambience, and this design can make for a soft romantic setting. So sit back and let your creative juices start to flow, this is going to get you excited.
The most important thing to remember with this project is that you must use LED lights. The reason for them is that they don’t get particularly warm, and so don’t create a fire hazard. Safety is of course always paramount. The other huge benefit of LED lights is that they are very energy efficient, something that is always an important factor. When choosing the length of the led strip, it is essential to ensure you start off with a long enough piece.
You want to make the rug big enough for the location, and the last thing you want is to end up short. To give you some sort of idea, all of the pictures you see here used a 20 feet strand, and even that only ends up in a small rug about one and a half feet in diameter, so the planning stage is the most important. Plastic crochet hooks and textile yarn will also be required.
The pattern is the blueprint for your design so you need to locate one from your local store or on the net. Once you have that in place then it’s time to start crocheting. If you look at the photo above you will see that the artist Bauta Witch went for a more floral design by adding a trim. The other benefit of the trim is it enables you to make the rug that little bit bigger with very little effort.
Sans Limites Crochet also felt inspired by Hyrkäs idea. She took a similar approach to the Crafty Queens one, with just a slight variation in the pattern. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery as they say and I am sure you will agree her design and finished rug looks stunning.
What I feel is important to point out is that whilst all of these ladies seemed to choose white, both for the yarn and the led light colour, you could experiment with maybe white yarn but blue LED lights for instance. I have no doubt you will all have fun designing and creating. Let us know how you get on in the comments.
