The Reasons Why You Should Use Vinegar in the Laundry

Doing the laundry is one of those thankless jobs that just seems to fill our days during the week. It doesn’t matter how frequently we wash clothes, there is always a fresh pile by the time the load of laundry is done.

Additionally, it just seems as if there should be more we can do for this simple household task.

Fortunately, there is more you can do! If you want to give your laundry a boost, the answer is as close as your pantry. I’m talking about vinegar, a safe and environmentally friendly alternative for toxic chemicals.

It does a great job in the laundry and it is budget friendly. Here are the reasons why you should use it.

1

It is Easy! – It is difficult to imagine that something so simple could be so effective. Using distilled white vinegar in the laundry offers you many options.

2

Soft and Snuggly – Sometimes it seems as if everything we put in the laundry comes out with a hard crust on it. The soft fibers of everything from blankets to dishtowels just seem to lose their appeal. 1 cup of white vinegar added to the rinse dispenser can help you to reclaim the snuggles.

3

Germs – Nobody wants to deal with germs and fortunately, you don’t have to. Add 2 cups of vinegar to your wash in place of bleach to kill the germs.

4

Colors – Do you want to protect your clothing from bleeding colors? Soak the individual item in a 1:1 mixture of water and vinegar overnight before you wash it.

5

Make It White – No need to continually use bleach to keep your whites white. 1 or 2 cups of vinegar added to the wash can help to whiten your clothes. You can also whiten dingy whites by soaking them in 5 cups of water with 2 cups of vinegar overnight.

6

Odors – Workout clothes can have a strong odor, even after you wash them. You may also experience a musty odor with any laundry that is left overnight before you dry it. This is another problem that is resolved when you add 1 or 2 cups of vinegar to the wash. You can use it as a presoak as well!

7

Stains – Spray white vinegar on difficult stains, such as ring around the collar or underarm stains. Let it soak for a few minutes and then toss it in the wash. If the stain has set, spray on vinegar and blot it with a white cloth prior to washing it.

8

Clean Machine – After the laundry is finished, don’t forget to wash the washer. A mixture of 5 cups of vinegar in an empty wash cycle on a monthly basis can do the trick. It can remove hard water deposits, disinfect the surface and remove mold from the inside of the washer and the pipes. A similar mixture can be used for cleaning the outside the machine as well.

There is no doubt that vinegar is a very versatile and inexpensive product for use in the laundry. It also rinses clean, so you don’t need to worry about a strange smell on your clothes after they have dried. As long as you avoid using it on delicate fabrics, you should be good to go.
