How Pickles And Other Fermented Foods Help Your Social Life

It is difficult to find someone that doesn’t enjoy a good pickle. Not only are they a great addition to hamburgers and other sandwiches, they also are quite delicious on their own.

What many people don’t know, however, is that pickles are not only good for your body, they can also alter your state of mind.

According to research posted in Smithsonian Magazine, pickles can have an indirect effect on issues such as anxiety and neurosis.

Matthew Hilimire from the College of William and Mary co-authored a study that experimented with how fermented foods affected neuroticism and social anxiety. The results shows that the foods did produce an “anxiolytic effect.”

Fermented foods have a positive influence on the digestive system because they are rich in probiotics. Although it is not known why, there does appear to be a close connection between a healthy stomach and a healthy brain. It may be so profound that Rebecca Rupp, from National Geographic made the following statement:

If you’ve got a case of social jimjams, eating a bowl of sauerkraut may be the equivalent of popping a Valium.

Although most of us would gladly increase our intake of fermented foods for that benefit only, there are also other reasons to do so. Probiotics also help to strengthen the immune system, so you may stay healthier if you eat fermented foods.

Eating a pickle a day may be just what you need if you have the jitters over giving a wedding speech or attending a meet-and-greet. Even if you don’t do it for the social benefit, eating pickles is not difficult because they are delicious!
