19 Household Items With Surprising Expiration Dates

When you look around the home, you might be surprised to find that there are many things with expiration dates. Most of us think about expiration dates and we think about milk or other food items, but many other objects in the home should be trashed after a specific amount of time as well.

The following is a list of some of the more common items that have expiration dates. Pay attention to this list and make it a part of your regular cleaning habits.

In the Bedroom

Pillows – 2-3 years

Pillows begin picking up dust mites after just a short amount of time.

Slippers – 6 months

Slippers may be a breeding ground for fungal infections. Wash them frequently and discard after six months.

In the Bathroom

Sponge – 2 weeks
Shower Pouf – 6 months

Sponges and shower poufs quickly become a breeding ground for mold and fungus. You can boil them periodically in hot water to kill bacteria.

Towels – 1-3 years

Bacteria can quickly grow on wet towels. Even washing your towels frequently will not solve the problem.

Toothbrush – 3 months

Anytime the bristles of the toothbrush become worn is a good time to replace it. You should also replace it if you have a cold or the flu or you could re-infect yourself.

Hydrogen peroxide – 2 months

Hydrogen peroxide turns to regular water after it is opened in two months. Don’t store a sealed bottle of hydrogen peroxide longer than a year.

On Your Dresser

Hairbrush – 1 year

Clean your hairbrush weekly and replace it after a year. If it contains natural boar bristles, replace it every 7-10 months

Perfume – 1-3 years

If your perfume contains essential oils, it will last three years when sealed and two years if it is stored open.

In the Nursery

Pacifier – 2-5 weeks

Latex pacifiers should be replaced on time, regardless of their appearance or how much they have been used.

Child Car Seats – 6-10 years

The foam and plastic may deteriorate over time and they lose shape. They also lose their ability to keep the child safe. Always opt for a new car seat, not a used one.

In the Wardrobe

Bras – 1-2 years

When your bra loses its shape or elasticity or if it gets uncomfortable, say goodbye to it.

Running shoes – 1 year

Your sneakers start losing cushioning once you’ve hit 250-300 miles.

In the Kitchen

Spices – 1-3 years

Spices tend to lose their smell and taste over time so toss them periodically.

Flour – 6-12 months

First grade flour can be stored for six months and high grade flour can be stored for a year

Fire extinguishers – 15 years

Replace it if any damage occurs

Power strips – 1-2 years

Power strips can go bad and it defeats the purpose if you keep them too long

Disinfectant – 3 months

Disinfectants may begin to lose their effectiveness if you keep them too long

Mosquito repellent – 2 years

After two years, a mosquito repellent is not useful any longer.
