Although there have been many gifts purchased for mothers on Mother’s Day, one that is common is a jewelry box. Rather than going out and picking up one from the store, you can make one at home and your mother will love the effort!
All you need to get started on this DIY project is some cardboard, yarn, glue, felt and a handful of toothpicks. After gathering those materials together, you are ready to make the perfect Mother’s Day gift that truly has a lot of heart.
The cardboard should be at least a little thick, as it will provide the base for the heart-shaped box you are creating. Draw your heart shape on the cardboard and cut it out.
Begin by putting a little glue on the tip of a toothpick and push it into the edge of the shape. Continue to repeat this step until the entire edge has toothpicks that are evenly spaced.
Now it is time to grab the yarn and if necessary, a needle. Tie the end of the yarn around one of the toothpicks and then begin weaving the string in and out between every toothpick around the edge of the cardboard.
After you get halfway up the toothpicks, tie the yarn off.
You should now string a single pearl onto each individual toothpick. The pearl will rest on top of the yarn.
After the pearls are in place, grab a new piece of yarn and begin wrapping it like you did the first time. When you get to the top, tie the string off again and then add some trim to give the box a little bling.
On the inside of the box, cut a piece of felt the same color as the yarn and put it around the bottom to finish off the look.
The end result is so cute that no one would be able to tell that it started with a single piece of cardboard and a few toothpicks.
