Dangerous Headache Types and How to Recognize Them

Many of us go through our days with a lot of stress and strain so it is not out of the ordinary for us to experience a dull headache. In fact, some of us may have a dull headache so frequently that we tend to ignore it! Although the headache may be a normal occurrence, you should not simply assume that it is harmless.

The fact of the matter is, some headaches can be quite dangerous and can be a warning sign that something needs attention right away. An over-the-counter pain killer, some anti-stress therapy or perhaps even some light exercise may help to treat the normal headache. If you have a headache persistently, however, you might want to consider the possibility that something else is going on.

Here are a few different dangerous types of headaches to watch for.

headaches

1. Thunderclap Headache – This type of headache may occur frequently and they not only come up quickly, they can be extremely severe. It typically only takes less than a minute and they can leave you on the floor in pain. If you experience what might be a thunderclap headache it can be a sign of a serious underlying problem, including the possibility of a brain bleed.

2. Post Injury Headache – Head injuries should never be considered normal and any bump to the head that results in a headache should not be ignored. If you have a head injury, the headache may be associated with a concussion, which would require medical attention.

3. Headaches in the Morning – If you sleep soundly at night, a headache should never be part of your morning. Having a morning headache typically means that you did not sleep properly during the night. Additionally, headaches in the morning can also be a sign of something more serious, even a brain tumor.

4. Sudden Headaches – Most of us experience tension headaches regularly, but they build up over time and tend to get stronger if they are not treated. If you have a headache that intensifies from one moment to the next or occurs suddenly without warning, it should be a red flag. That is especially true if the headache is accompanied by numbness on one side of the body, a difficulty with speaking or weakness in the arms, legs or face. If you have that experience, it could be the sign of a heart attack.
